About the Course
This course introduces students to the principles and technologies behind Mobile Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Location-Based Services (LBS). Students will learn how to collect, manage, and visualize geospatial data using modern mobile tools and web-based services.
Technologies We Use
During the course, we work with a variety of open-source technologies:
- PostGIS: a spatial extension to the PostgreSQL database, enabling powerful geospatial queries and data storage.
- GeoServer: a Java-based web application that serves geospatial data as web services such as WMS and WFS.
- Apache Tomcat: a Java Servlet Container that hosts the GeoServer application and allows users to access map services via HTTP.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Design and develop mobile applications with geospatial functionality
- Connect mobile apps to web-based geoservices
- Use a GIS server environment with Tomcat, GeoServer, and PostGIS
- Publish and consume spatial data over the web
Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for students in geoinformatics, computer science, and related disciplines who are interested in combining spatial data with modern web and mobile technologies.
